Name: Owen, T. J. V. (Thomas Jefferson Vance) (1824-1876)

Historical Note: T.J.V. (Thomas Jefferson Vance) Owen (1824-1876) was born in Kaskaskia, Illinois on July 23,1824, and educated at St. Mary’s College, Perryville, Missouri. He came to Springfield in 1840 andwas associated with Drs. Joseph T. Betts and Elijah Frazier (Fraser). During the Mexican War,Owen was a hospital steward and later assistant surgeon of the 4th Illinois Infantry, Company B,which he helped organize. After the war, Owen returned to Springfield and became partners withBirchall in 1847. In 1855, Owen left the business to become partner in a drugstore with his brother,William F. Owen. In 1848, Owen married Mary Eliza Hurst and they had two children: MaryEveline (1849-1855) and William H. (1852- ). Owen died March 19, 1876 in Decatur.
